August 17, 2015 By Jason Eelbode

LENOX®, a leading manufacturer of high-quality cutting tools, is celebrating 100 years of design and innovation. Founded in 1915 as LENOX American Saw, the company started as a hacksaw blade manufacturer with a 10-employee team. Today, as a global brand employing over 900 people and selling products in more than 70 countries, LENOX continues as a market leader in developing best-in-class products at the forefront of innovation and quality.

“The unmatched quality and durability of LENOX products is still driven by our founding mission statement, to create tools that allow customers to unlock their full potential,” said Bill Burke, Newell Rubbermaid chief operating officer and group president, Tools. “Today, we continue with that same passion for innovation and the desire to provide professionals with tools that cut faster and last longer.”

LENOXbuildingLENOX’s history of innovation has contributed to notable advancements in the development of cutting tools. In 1920, the brand manufactured a variety of hacksaw and band saw blades before producing top-of-the-line hole saws in 1959. In 1965, LENOXintroduced an electron beam welder into their manufacturing, leading to the first American-made bi-metal band saw blades being sold in North America. In 1977, LENOX expanded their hand tools and power tool accessories by introducing the first bi-metal reciprocating saw blades to the market. By 1996, LENOX became the first U.S. band saw blade manufacturer to achieve ISO certification, demonstrating the brand’s commitment to meeting and surpassing customers’ expectations.

In keeping with their passion for innovation, LENOX has introduced a variety of new products in 2015, with more releases to come. LENOX’s new products include the Gold® Power Arc Curved Reciprocating Saw Blades, delivering up to two times longer life than standard LENOX straight blades, CAST MASTER™ XL Band Saw Blades, the new carbide band saw blade delivering superior performance in high speed aluminum cutting applications, and CircTech™ PRECISION CM200, a cermet tipped high precision circular saw blade optimized for cutting high alloy steels and tool steels.

To celebrate the past century of innovation, LENOX is running a number of promotional activities with distributor partners and end users throughout 2015 and in September will host a Centennial Celebration for employees and customers at its headquarters in East Longmeadow, MA.

About LENOX:
LENOX, part of Newell Rubbermaid’s global portfolio of leading brands, began in 1915 with a 10-employee team and a passion for bringing customers hacksaw blades that cut faster and lasted longer. Now, 100 years later, our passion hasn’t changed—but our team has grown to more than 900 people who manufacture and market the LENOX products in more than 70 countries. Our ISO 9001-certified facility in East Longmeadow, Mass., boasts a 500,000 square ft., 11-acre space for designing, testing and manufacturing power tool accessories, hand tools, band saw blades and accessories.

Mastercam X9 and Dynamic Motion on Display at WESTEC 2015

August 17, 2015 By Jason Eelbode

MastercamWESTEC 2015 attendees will get to see and experience the most powerful Mastercam machining software yet. Stop by booth # 1715 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, CA, September 15-17 for a look at Mastercam X9 which introduces Dynamic Motion improvements, Multiaxis enhancements, and many Design and System features to make your job easier. There will be live presentations every 30 minutes on Mastercam products, available in both English and Spanish.

This year at WESTEC, attendees have the opportunity to register for a Mastercam X9 Rollout Event, hosted by CNC Software and local Mastercam Reseller, to learn about the latest tools in Mastercam X9. Also available are three Brew & View breakout sessions located at the main stage of the show floor. Topics are:

• The Evolution of CAM: An Introduction to Mastercam’s Dynamic Motion
• Machining Way Too Fast: A First Experience Jumping into Mastercam Dynamic Motion
• Speed vs. Power: Maximizing Material Removal with Mastercam’s Dynamic Motion

Dynamic Motion Technology
Dynamic Motion toolpaths follow a proprietary and sophisticated set of rules that take into consideration a broad data set. To create the most efficient cutting motion possible, Dynamic toolpaths calculate not only the area where metal will be removed; they also take into account the changing condition of the material throughout various stages of machining.

Design and Multiaxis Features
Dynamic Xform allows you to switch between gnomon manipulation and geometry manipulation mode at any time. Solid Disassemble is a new Model Prep function that takes an assembly and lays each body out in a single pane. The associativity between solids and toolpaths has been greatly improved. Now when bodies are edited, only the toolpaths directly affected by the change in the solid body are marked dirty.

The new Multiaxis Link ensures reposition moves between 2- through 5-axis operations are safe and collision-free. Multiaxis Link is an operation that takes a list of toolpath operations and a safety zone shape as input. Mastercam X9 introduces improved processing logic for advanced multiaxis toolpaths. Select Multiaxis toolpaths now process in the Multi-Threading Manager, streamlining your 2- through 5-axis workflow experience.

Also available in Mastercam X9:
• Preview Toolpaths support for select Mill operations to see your results before closing the toolpath parameters dialog.
• Surface High Speed Hybrid now supports dedicated flat processing, making Hybrid even more intelligent and efficient.
• The efficiency of the 3D HST Rest Roughing Linking has been improved. The moves are closer to your model, eliminating costly excessive air motion.
• Mill Tooling introduces two new tool types, as well as changes to two existing tools.

About Mastercam:
Developed by CNC Software, Inc., Mastercam is Windows®-based CAD/CAM software for 2- through 5-axis routing, milling and turning, 2- and 4-axis wire EDM, 2D and 3D design, surface and solid modeling, artistic relief cutting, and Swiss machining. CNC Software is a privately owned corporation founded in 1983. The U.S.-based company provides Mastercam CAD/CAM solutions to more than 200,000 installations in 75 countries in industries including mold-making, prototyping, automotive, medical, aerospace, and consumer products. Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has appointed Bill Weier, Human Resources Director at Fives Cincinnati, to the newly reconstituted Kentucky Workforce Innovation Board (KWIB). Weier is one of several new board members representing the state’s manufacturing sector, and he will serve a term that expires June 2018.

BillWeier_headshotThe KWIB’s overarching goal is “to build a workforce in Kentucky that companies cannot wait to hire,” according the Governor. The board is to develop recommendations for strategically aligning the state’s workforce, economic and educational systems, business and labor, and elected officials so that workers acquire the skills and credentials that businesses need to compete and create jobs in Kentucky.

Fives is a nationally recognized workforce-development leader that invests heavily in training for all levels of its staff, from trade-school apprentices to senior management. “Staff development is a social issue, an economic issue and a national security issue that we take seriously,” said Weier. “It is vital for companies like Fives, because it takes years to develop the skills and knowledge required to thrive in computer-driven manufacturing. We believe we know what it takes to succeed, and we are anxious to help guide KWIB to its goal.”

Fives starts employee development early by hosting high-school tech campers from area universities. “It’s important to influence career choices early,” said Kevin Lichtenberg, Fives Vice President & General Manager U.S. Operations. The company also participated in the recent White House Upskill Summit, a national initiative launched by President Obama. Fives is currently paying salary and tuition for 12 apprentices who work and attend Gateway Community and Technical College, and the company has invested more than $2 million in the nationally featured program since 2005. “We have valuable experience to share with KWIB, and high hopes for Kentucky workers,” Lichtenberg added.

Siemens Sinamics Drive Family Features Integrated Web Server

August 17, 2015 By Jason Eelbode

siemensSquareSiemens announces the enhancement of its popular Sinamics® S120 drive system with an integrated web server to facilitate more efficient diagnostic and maintenance functionality for end-users, integrators and system designers alike. With this drive improvement, a user may access the Sinamics S120 with any PC with a browser capable of internet connectivity through a standard Ethernet interface to execute a variety of functions. If a wireless LAN (WLAN) router is networked, web pages can be viewed using other web-capable devices such as tablets and smart phones.

Among the functions possible with this integrated web server on Sinamics S120 drive systems are the ability to download a plant configuration, commission a drive from anywhere, perform firmware updates, access an immediate status overview on the drive, check and assess all alarm and fault messages. In addition, users can monitor and adapt all Siemensprocess or line parameter settings, archive machine documentation, including all notes taken, create customized server pages, set-up user administration and access level for operator and service personnel, plus perform virtually all drive diagnostics and remote maintenance actions. This combination of service possibilities results in significant reductions in machine or line downtimes due to faster, more efficient diagnostic and maintenance procedures.

This Sinamics S120 drive system enhancement ideally suits applications where no special software or model version dependencies are desired. Series commissioning on a line is possible and the web server is compatible with all system security measures, such as a firewall. An up-to-date internet browser is sufficient for access. This web server capability is integral on Sinamics S120 drive firmware V4.6 or greater.
