U-tech Flexible Adapter System Now Offered on Right-Angle Heads from Heimatec

August 1, 2015 By Jason Eelbode

Significantly reduces inventory, changeover time for lathe and mill/turn users

Heimatec U-tech Flexible Adapter System

U-tec® flexible adapter system from Heimatec, now offered on all angle heads, allows various tools to be fixtured in a single base, using adapters and a collet nut, thereby significantly reducing inventory requirements and changeover time for the busy shop.

Heimatec, a world leader in live tools, angle heads and multi-spindle drill heads, today announces immediate availability of its popular U-tec® flexible adapter system on all right-angle heads in the company’s line.   Models are now available for most popular lines of machine tools in the North American market, according to company President Preben Hansen. The company plans to include its U-tec® adapter system on all angle heads, going forward, according to Hansen. He notes this development will especially provide the system’s rigidity and quick-change capabilities to users doing deep hole drilling with extended tools.

U-tec® is the company’s patented flexible tool adapter system that allows a standard ER output live tool to accept various adapters for different applications. This allows users the ability to have quick changeover of tools on almost any lathe or mill, using a single live tool, without having to commit to a quick-change system on the initial purchase. A facemill adapter, for example, can be quickly positioned into the standard holder, without the need for a completely new base being installed. This significantly reduces inventory costs as well as changeover time, for the busy shop.

The U-tec® system, according to Preben Hansen, “…represents a real improvement in lathe and mill/turn tooling design. U-tec® allows great user flexibility, while a polygonal drive system ensures extremely high power transmission stability and faster set-up with absolutely no loss in performance or accuracy, because the live tool base remains in position and only the adapter and collet get swapped out.”

He went on to explain the unique collet nuts on the U-tec® system have internal threading for rigid mounting and that this new tool adapter system enables the actual cutting tool to be brought into closer proximity to the bearing, thus further improving performance in use. This benefit results from the short and compact tool length design. Internal coolant up to 2000 psi (140 bar) is provided as standard.

Every adapter in the U-tec® system, complete with any necessary clamping nuts and adapters for arbor, Weldon, CAT 40 and CAT 50, is now available in shell mill, face mill, ER extension, side lock, shrink fit, hydraulic and blank styles. U-tec® angle heads are compatible with most automatic tool changers, feature 360º manual positioning and include torque arms and a stop block. Torque rated up to 150 Nm (110 ft-lb).

The U-tec® system is available for all major turning machines on the market today. Heimatec currently manufactures over 10,000 live tool types and has a full inventory at its Chicago-area headquarters for North American operations.

BIG Kaiser to Display Variety of Newest Products at WESTEC in Booth #1035

August 1, 2015 By Jason Eelbode

BIG Kaiser Precision Tooling Inc. will have a variety of products from its family of tooling brands in booth #1035 at WESTEC, September 15-17 in Los Angeles. Visitors to the booth will find several of the newest products from BIG Kaiser’s family of brands, highlighted by solutions for workholding, tool holding, presetting and boring.

BIG Kaiser WESTEC 2015Boring
The newest ready-to-go finish boring kit from KAISER, based around the EWN 2-50XL head, provides everything to tool up for boring jobs in an extraordinary range of diameters, Ø.700”-6.000” with just one head. To make this new range possible with just one boring head instead of 2 as before, the engineers at KAISER came up with a new, rigid, dynamic center-mounted boring bar/insert holder capable of maintaining consistent precision throughout the full range of the center-mount option.

Tool Holding
BIG Daishowa’s two latest product innovations will be on hand; revolutions in anti-vibration and anti-pullout technology. The Smart Damper virtually eliminates vibration in deep-hole finish boring and extended-reach face milling. A unique mechanism functions as both counter and friction dampers, resulting in better surface finishes, faster metal removal rates and higher accuracy. Integral and modular solutions are available. Also on display will be the Mega Perfect Grip; a no-slip, anti-pullout milling chuck that combines the cutting performance of heavy-duty milling chucks with security against pullout of solid side lock tool holders.

Tool Presetters
A pair of presetter options will be on hand in L.A. The DIASET bench-top presetter is known for its sturdy construction and repeatable accuracy. The latest generation of this popular entry-level presetter includes some new amenities in high demand in modern shops like a camera and 8” LCD touch screen. This new combination enables angle, radius and length measurements. Plus, two built-in USB ports allow for simultaneous data saving and printer connection, reducing risk of human error.

The MAGIS is the only bench-top tool presetter in the world with built-in Retention Knob Clamping. This strong, repeatable seating in the spindle—mimicking that of a machine tool—is just one reason the MAGIS achieves unmatched accuracy and repeatability. Plus, a new full CNC spindle and X and Y axis controls allow for automated measuring cycles.

Workholding
The two newest versions of BIG Kaiser’s best-selling round chuck workholding solution, the ESM 138 chuck can be seen at WESTEC. Both are direct swaps for the original chuck design. The new ESM 138 Turbo is built with a closed back, keeping the mechanisms clean and giving it turbo capability—more than doubling the clamping force, up to roughly 3,520 lbs, by simply connecting an air source. This version also has slotted pin actuation for faster, stronger transfer of clamping force upon closing.

The other update, the ERGO 138, also features a closed back. The back cover has an air blast port which allows for cleaning of the knob and chuck before locking, ensuring firm and consistent positioning. Rectangular clamping pins are substituted for standard round pins for a knee-type lock and reduction of slippage. The body height of 28mm is 11mm shorter than the standard ESM 138, providing more workable area and the contact ring has been expanded to Ø80mm from Ø60mm for a larger contact surface area.

About Big Kaiser Precision Tooling:
BIG Kaiser Precision Tooling Inc. is a leader in high precision tooling systems and solutions. With brands including BIG Daishowa, KAISER, Speroni, Unilock, Sphinx and more, BIG Kaiser’s line is focused on extreme accuracy and repeatability. BIG Kaiser’s mission is to support North American manufacturers with products that are designed and manufactured to a superior standard. Guaranteed.

Mitsui Seiki Launches New Vertex 75X II Vertical Machining Center

July 31, 2015 By Jason Eelbode

Mitsui Seiki has evolved its popular “Vertex 750-5X” line of machines with new features and capabilities, and a broader range of options and configurations within the series. The new model series, comprising six distinct models, is now called Vertex 75X II. Linear axes (X, Y, Z) strokes are 750 mm (29.5”) x 800 mm (31.4”) x 700 mm (27.5”).

MitsuSeiki - Vertex 75X IIOne of the key new features is an enhanced ultra high accuracy package. This option enhances Mitsui Seiki’s existing, well-established construction techniques for accuracy and precision. As such, the Vertex line of machines are very well suited for tight-tolerance mold and die work, aerospace, energy, and other high precision component applications. Users can gain significant production improvements eliminating the traditional machine ‘warm up’ time for very demanding precision jobs. Machine geometry is still unparalleled, and Positioning Accuracy in X, Y, and Z axes is 0.001 mm (0.000040”). A-axis: ±6 arc seconds; C-axis: ±4 arc seconds.”

In response to customer feedback and market demands, Mitsui Seiki now offers a new 30,000 rpm spindle with the Vertex 75X II, in addition to the 15,000,18,000 and 25,000 rpm choices. Customers can now take full advantage of the machine’s acceleration and deceleration characteristics and high speed machining functions. An HSK-80 taper spindle connection (for those requiring more heavy-duty machining) is available as an option to compliment the existing HSK-63 and 40-taper tool interfaces.

The Vertex 75X II line includes several configurations in the range, based on table sizes and types from 225 mm (9”) to 500 mm (19.7”) diameter. A choice of rotary axis drive systems – high torque geared type or direct drive – allows for the optimum machine configuration to suit the customer needs.

Mitsui Seiki’s tradition is to build rigid and ultra precise metal cutting and grinding machines. The Vertex 75X II geometric accuracy is carefully monitored in the tightest temperature-controlled factory environment in the world. The machine features a proprietary cast iron bed, which provides an ultra rigid, and thermally stable machine structure. A unique “box-in-box” design provides superior rigidity, stiffness and agility that is only available in a machine of this caliber. As will all Mitsui Seiki machines, guideway mounting surfaces are hand-scraped, achieving very high volumetric accuracies. This process is far superior to simply machined and /or ground systems. This engineering and construction concept, coupled with a newly designed machine, now provides users with even more competitive advantages over traditional, similar purpose products.

U.S. Debut among Hyundai WIA Machine Center Technology on Display at WESTEC, Booth #1515

July 30, 2015 By Jason Eelbode

Hyundai WIA - WestecHyundai WIA Machine America will have multiple CNC machines on display at WESTEC in booth #1515. The event will be the first time the new and improved F500 Plus vertical machining center is displayed in the U.S. In addition to vertical machining, product experts will host demonstrations of the latest advances in compact CNC turning and multi-task turning centers—the very technology Hyundai Motors relies on to build parts for the roughly 8 million cars it produces across the globe annually.

Introducing the F500 Plus – Vertical Machining Centers
This machine utilizes a high-precision, high-torque BIG PLUS® spindle in a construction that virtually eliminates thermal growth during heavy duty cutting. Thirty-position, servo-powered tool magazines make for quick and reliable tool changes. High-speed axis travel on roller linear motion guide ways reduces non-cutting time for greater productivity.

The E160A – Compact CNC Turning Center
This compact turning center packs tons of productivity in a small-footprint, affordable package. The center’s 45-degree, one-piece casting bed structure and 6” chuck provide the rigidity and strength for high-performance machining of small diameter parts. And with a travel speed of 30m/min on linear motion guide ways, the E160A gets the job done fast.

The L2100SY – Multi-Tasking Wedge Type Y-Axis CNC Turning Center
This turning center has an 8” chuck on the main spindle and a 6” chuck on the sub spindle for complex machining in a single setup. A latest-generation BMT top plate increases tool performance and rigidity by securing each tool with four screws. Cutting is reinforced by all-axis box guideway design.

About Hyundai WIA:

Since 1977, Hyundai WIA has been a core division of the Hyundai Motor Group, building the CNC turning centers, machining centers and multitasking machines the automotive manufacturer uses to build its parts. Hyundai WIA Machine America makes that same technology available to the broader manufacturing marketplace in North America.
