Mazak Demos Latest Technology for Winning the Manufacturing Race at PRI

December 10, 2015 By Jason Eelbode

This week at the Performance Racing Industry (PRI) Show, Mazak demos how its latest machine tools provide the speed, precision and processing flexibility necessary for racecar part prototyping and production.

Whether it comes to machining basic suspension brackets or processing complex engine parts, PRI attendees who visited booth 5601 discovered that Mazak has a diverse selection of machine tools ready to tackle any shop requirement. Applications engineers were available to meet with attendees and discuss ways to reduce cycle times, maintain part consistency and boost productivity in fast-paced environments.

During the show, Mazak ran real-world part-cutting demos on three of its latest machine tools. Representing different product lines, these models will showcase the different levels of manufacturing technology Mazak has available to the racing industry, from basic turning machines to advanced multi-tasking solutions.

Perfect for small shops, Mazak developed the compact QUICK TURN PRIMOS 100 S turning center with productivity and value in mind. Throughout the show, the machine will demonstrate how it effectively processes parts up to 7.09″ in diameter and 7.87″ long by way of a robust integral spindle/motor design, 8-position drum turret and user-friendly CNC with conversational and EIA/ISO programming.

Mazak VCU500A-5XIdeal for shops that want full 5-axis machining capabilities but require an affordable solution, the VCU-500A/5X vertical machining center can productively process complex parts up to 19.68″ in diameter and 12″ high. PRI attendees will see how the machine’s trunnion-style rotary/tilt table and new MAZATROL SmoothX CNC allow for the cost-effective production of shifter knobs.

Shops that produce gear-type parts will want to experience the highly advanced performance capabilities of the INTEGREX i-100ST Multi-Tasking machine. Mazak recently added a new Position Controlled Hobbing function to its MAZATROL SmoothX CNC that allows the machine to excel during hobbing and skiving operations. Furthermore, the machine brings high throughput to small, complex parts production by featuring two turning spindles, a milling spindle and a lower turret that allows shops to perform first and second machining operations simultaneously or handle sequential operations on a single workpiece.

Overall, Mazak has unmatched experience developing machines and applications that win races. For more than 20 years, the company has been a Penske Racing technology partner, providing the tools and training the organization needs to keep its parts manufacturing in-house.

Tiger-tec Silver is available in two CVD coated grades (WKP25S, WKP35S) for the machining of steel and cast iron, and three PVD coated grades (WSM35S, WKK25S and WSP45S) for the machining of steel, stainless steel, cast iron and difficult to cut materials.

Further, the inserts are secured by Torx Plus screws, adding an extra level of stability, and thus process reliability. In addition, a screw-secured solid carbide shim provides optimum support and high feed per tooth, plus optimal contact in the pocket.
