Walter Surface Technologies Publishes White Paper On Documented Cost Savings For Abrasives

October 9, 2015 By Jason Eelbode

Walter Surface Technologies, the global industry leader in surface treatment technologies, announced today that is has published an industry white paper entitled “Documented Cost Savings for Abrasives.”

Demonstrating and documenting cost savings has become essential for today’s industrial suppliers and distributors as part of proving their solution offering to customers.

“Documented cost savings (DCS) programs are part of a larger movement towards providing value-added solutions to customers.” explains Dan Pirro, Vice President of Marketing at Walter Surface Technologies

“More than three decades ago, Walter recognized the need to document cost savings” says Pirro. Walter’s earliest Productivity Analysis program was originally designed as a simple method to demonstrate right on the shop floor why a grinding wheel priced at $3 was actually more efficient than a competitive model priced at $2 per wheel. “As the DCS movement evolved, Walter developed a three-step program to provide important and relevant information to the end user and centered on the end user’s plant and shop.”

The 3 step program includes:

Step 1 – Bucket Program: A simple process where used and discarded abrasives are collected and analysed.

Step 2 – Safety Seminars: Seminars to encourage a safer work environment.

Step 3 – Productivity Program: A personalized performance analysis of the user’s work environment.

Author of the white paper, Product Manager Tom Morris spent several months conducting comparative tests, including those done in a laboratory setting, as well as in-field tests performed on the customer’s own equipment.

The Documented Cost Savings for Abrasives white paper formally reports on four companies– large, medium, and small – and a range of industry types. The final investigation on just how much money can be saved by switching out an abrasive is surprising.

Seco Manufacturing Day Event Draws 170 Detroit Area Students

October 9, 2015 By Jason Eelbode

Committed to working with local schools to generate interest in manufacturing careers, Seco Tools welcomed 170 Detroit Metro high school students to the company’s North American headquarters in Troy, Michigan, on Friday, October 2 for National Manufacturing Day 2015. Seco partnered with MSC Industrial Supply for the event, which highlighted the diverse job options available within the manufacturing industry.

Organized by the National Association of Manufacturers, Manufacturing Day is a celebration of modern manufacturing meant to inspire the next generation of manufacturers. It occurs annually on the first Friday in October. This year’s Manufacturing Day included 2,397 events hosted throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Students attending Manufacturing Day at Seco selected from a variety of breakout sessions highlighting unique careers, including IT, engineering, CAD, distribution, production and sales. Industry experts and college advisors were on hand to meet with students and answer questions about these career paths.

Students also received a tour of Seco’s technical center and world-class custom tool production facility. Demonstrations of Seco - MFG DAYCNC machining and 3D printing equipment provided students with a snapshot of the latest technologies used in today’s manufacturing industry.

“Seco is highly committed both to our industry and our community,” says Rob Keenan, president of Seco Tools, LLC. “Manufacturing Day has become an excellent way to expose local young people to exciting career options that may otherwise be overlooked. Both of our sessions were fully booked over a month in advance of the event, so there’s definitely curiosity among today’s students. We enjoyed hosting them and sharing our perspective on the true potential that a career in manufacturing can offer.”

According to results from a skills gap study released earlier this year by the Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte, over the next decade nearly 3.5 million manufacturing jobs likely need to be filled. The skills gap, caused in part by an anticipated increase in manufacturing jobs due to economic expansion and baby boomer retirements, is expected to result in 2 million of those jobs going unfilled.

“As a company that contributes to the success of the industrial sector, MSC was pleased to have sponsored Manufacturing Day and to have partner with Seco,” says Erik Gershwind, president and chief executive officer of MSC Industrial Supply Co. “Introducing bright, young students to the exciting career opportunities available in manufacturing opens up possibilities for them and contributes to the long-term success of our industrial economy.”

Global Shop Solutions - CaraghTo apply for inclusion in the directory, service providers must answer a questionnaire and provide historical evidence of their experience in helping manufacturing companies in the SME environment. Global Shop Solutions was chosen in part because of its best practices approach to implementing ERP software within a six-month time frame.“We’re proud to be listed in the directory because it validates the quality of our product and our implementation approach.
