Big Kaiser Introduces Two Powerful Additions to Unilock’s Most Popular 138 Series Workholding Chuck
The mid-size diameter and adaptability to custom fixture designs make the Unilock 138 series from BIG Kaiser one of it’s best-selling round chuck workholding solution. Now come two new additions to the 138 series that make it an even more powerful and versatile solution for demanding workholding scenarios—the ESM 138 Turbo and the ERGO 138.
These new versions share the same fundamental body dimensions—diameter, bolt hole pattern, open port orientation, knob type, etc.—making them direct swaps for the original ESM 138 that operators have come to rely on. The ESM 138 Turbo and ERGO 138 also boast all of Unilock’s core features—including quick and easy setup and loading, self-guided top-side mounting, and the strength and consistency of zero-point clamping.
What’s Special about the ESM 138 Turbo
This improved version of the ESM 138 chuck has a closed back. This gives the chuck turbo capability, which more than doubles the spring-only clamping force, up to roughly 3,520 lbs, by simply connecting an air source to either the 1/8G turbo port on the OD, or the underside o-ring port. The sealed back also protects the chuck’s piston from contaminants, reducing maintenance while improving consistency.
Another new design feature appearing in the ESM 138 Turbo is slotted pin actuation. The dual-angled slot allows for faster and stronger transfer of clamping force upon closing, as well as a quicker, even release of the knob.
What’s Special about the ERGO 138
The ERGO 138 also has a sealed back, protecting the internal mechanics from contamination and making it turbo-capable. In another effort to help maintain clean operations, the back cover has an air blast port which cleans the knob upon entry. By connecting an air source, operators can clean the chuck and knob before locking it, ensuring firm and consistent positioning during loading/unloading and preserving the equipment. It’s ideal for fine-particle materials like cast iron.
The ERGO 138 is 11mm shorter than the standard ESM 138, featuring a new body height of 28mm, providing more workable area. Rectangular clamping pins are substituted for standard round pins and now lock the knob more securely with a knee-type lock—reducing the chance of slippage. The inner contact ring has been expanded to Ø80mm, offering a larger contact surface area than the ESM 138’s Ø60mm. These features add improved characteristics, but do not affect the ability to exchange with original ESM 138 chucks on a 1-for-1 basis.

The Reshoring Initiative and Walmart Launch Effort to Help Suppliers Reshore
The Reshoring Initiative recently announced a program in partnership with Walmart to help companies manufacture more consumer products in the United States.
Walmart has committed to increase its U.S. purchases by $50 billion annually by January 2023. Harry Moser, founder and president of the Reshoring Initiative observed, “We were honored to be called on by Walmart to support its Made in USA program. We estimate the company’s increased purchases will add 300,000 U.S. manufacturing jobs. Helping Walmart succeed fits our Mission perfectly.”
The new program provides direct, personal access to 35 manufacturing trade associations, companies, banks, U.S. Commerce Department offices and other groups. Each group has assigned dedicated resources to help companies develop and implement plans to produce or source more domestically produced goods. The program launch was coordinated with Walmart’s Open Call and U.S. Manufacturing Summit in Bentonville, Arkansas, which was attended by the U.S. Commerce Secretary, two governors and current and prospective suppliers.
The Reshoring Support page on Walmart’s JUMP (Jobs in U.S. Manufacturing Portal) site links to the Reshoring Initiative’s Resources for Retail Suppliers page, which contains resources to facilitate and accelerate supplier efforts. Issues from product selection, to cost reduction, managing the transition to reshoring and financing are included for large, small, foreign and domestic companies. The resources offer guidance to help manufacturers select products and succeed in profitably producing or sourcing products in the United States.
“When Walmart committed to buy an additional $250 billion over 10 years in products that support American jobs, we knew we could also play an important role as facilitator and accelerator,” said Cindi Marsiglio, vice president of US manufacturing at Walmart. “We created Walmart-Jump.com to help companies find resources on manufacturing in the U.S. The Reshoring Initiative’s support page is a great addition to that resource library.”
Harry Moser noted, “Based on published articles accessible in our Library, the Reshoring Initiative concludes that Walmart has supported at least 43 suppliers to add 4,579 or more U.S. manufacturing jobs so far, and is currently the largest force driving reshoring. The Reshoring Initiative is delighted to provide these resources to accelerate this effort. We call on other retailers to get on board.” He added, “We thank the 35 groups that have volunteered as resources. Their personal commitment will make this program a success.”
The Reshoring Initiative seeks to expand the scope and impact of the Resources for Retail Suppliers page by incorporating expertise from additional sources and adding more participating retailers. We call on manufacturers to use the resources, other relevant groups to volunteer to be listed and retailers that are interested in Made in USA to provide a contact point to be displayed along with the Walmart JUMP site.
Companies can help improve manufacturing employment by consistently utilizing advanced metrics for supply chain sourcing decisions. The Reshoring Initiative’s Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Estimator is the best-known publically available tool for this purpose. The TCO Estimator allows users to easily determine the total cost of offshoring by accounting for and understanding the relevant offshoring costs, which include inventory carrying costs, shipping expenses, intellectual property risks and more.
About The Reshoring Initiative:
A 48-year manufacturing industry veteran and retired President of GF AgieCharmilles, Harry Moser founded the Reshoring Initiative to move lost jobs back to the United States. For his efforts with the Reshoring Initiative, he was named to Industry Week magazine’s Manufacturing Hall of Fame in 2010.

NASA’s Ames Research Center Utilizes Skyhook Lifting System
NASA’s Ames Research Center – Robert Walker
At NASA’s Ames Research Center we study the chemistry of astronomical objects within our Solar System and beyond. We use a vacuum system that was designed to reproduce the ultra low temperatures and vacuum of outer space. This is done with diffusion pumps for vacuum and a special refrigeration unit we call the “cooler”. To access parts for maintenance we must periodically lift the cooler out.
The Sky Hook Model 8570 portable lifting device is an ideal “lifting parts system” for this application.
Before Sky Hook we were limited to using coolers that only weighed 15 lbs. which were lifted out by hand. It sounds easy, but not everyone could handle these smaller systems because of the attached high pressure helium lines. Obviously this method of lifting machine accessories or coolers was not ideal. Also, because using this method to lift parts was so awkward, occasionally someone would damage the sensors on the cooler.
With helium hoses connected, the newest cooler weighs over 40 lbs and is even more awkward to handle. Back injury prevention is always a consideration (so it would be very impractical to lift the unit up by hand to remove).
I knew we needed a portable lifting device that would allow us to lift the cooler straight up with ease, and then swing it around to the cart for maintenance. Sky Hook 8570 provided the perfect solution to all our problems.
When the research scientists saw the Sky Hook 8570 in use, they all agreed that it was a fantastic lifting parts system.
There was one unexpected bonus–as you can see in the close-up picture of the cooler–we are able to stop lifting at any point. Here you can see the gold-plated window holder which can easily be cleaned, then lowered back into the vacuum chamber.
This alone is a big time saver AND far less awkward, because on the smaller 15lb units, the Cooler has to be completely removed and placed on a table–at the same time by hand-and at the same time deal with helium lines.
Another great feature is the ability to rotate the cooler 180º, and lower it through the hole in the lift cart (where it can sit for more work that might be required).

EXSYS to Spotlight Advanced Gearboxes, Lathe Tooling at CMTS 2015
Manufacturers in search of precision gear solutions or productive tooling for CNC lathes should stop by booth 2022 at CMTS 2015, taking place September 28 – October 1 at the International Centre in Mississauga, Ontario. Here, EXSYS Canada Ltd. will showcase the latest gearboxes, tool holders and adapter systems it offers from EPPINGER.
Suited for a range of applications, including machinery, automation and robotics, EPPINGER’s compact, high-transmission gearboxes meet strict demands for stiffness, efficiency and performance. These precision gearboxes come in a variety of types, including bevel, hypoid, planetary and cycloidal designs, to bring smooth, reliable operation to a variety of industry segments.
Designed for use with all major machine tool brands, the EPPINGER Dual Collect Chuck is a double spindle tool holder that expands the capacity of individual turret positions on a CNC turning center. With two live tools in one turret station, shops can reduce their job setup times and increase tooling versatility for different workpieces.
EPPINGER Slim Fit tool holders accommodate VBS 24-station turrets on Haas CNC lathes. The compact housings of these tool holders allow shops to utilize all 12 bolt-on and 12 VDI stations for maximum tooling space and optimal productivity. Available in radial right angle and straight axial configurations with coolant capabilities, the holders have a lightweight, yet rigid design that minimizes the stress put on the machine turrets.
With the EPPINGER Gear Hobber attachment for all machine tool brand live-turret stations, shops can achieve single-setup, one-operation gear cutting capability when generating splines, spur or helical gears. The attachment’s adjustable toolholding system eliminates the need to rough gears on one machine then transfer them to another for gear hobbing. To compensate for different types of grooves and pitches in splines and gears, users simply adjust the vernier dial to the applicable settings.
When it comes to turning operations, shops can significantly shorten their changeover times with the EPPINGER PRECI-FLEX® modular quick-change tooling system. The system incorporates selections of adapters engineered to hold a variety of cutting tool types and shank designs. The adapters have a common connecting feature that locks into standard base units mounted on a turning machine’s turret.
PRECI-FLEX lets shops preset tools in adapters offline then quickly and easily switch the tool/adapter assemblies in and out of the base units. Tool positions repeat exactly within +/- 3 µm, eliminating the need to re-center, touch off or make test cuts after a tool exchange.
Another advanced form of modular quick-change tooling technology EXSYS offers is the EPPINGER Compacto™ C3, C4, C5 and C6 base holder. When compared with traditional base holder designs, the compact size of Compacto provides more space for machining in tight workspaces as well as offers improved torque transmission and rigidity for increased tool accuracy. The holder’s polygon shape connection (PSC), which is the shortest PSC interface in the industry, further adds to the system’s precision and stability.
